How to choose a sofa you will keep for twenty years

Tan leather sofa measured for a buying guide

Most sofas are replaced after seven years. Not because they break — because they were never quite right. Here is how our workshop thinks about the one piece you will touch every single day.

Start with the front door

Measure the narrowest point between the street and the sofa's final spot: stairwells, lift doors, the front door itself. Our Halden ships in two parts for exactly this reason, but many beautiful sofas never make it past the second floor. Measure twice, order once.

Seat depth decides everything

Under 55 cm and you sit upright, over 65 cm and you lounge. Households that do both should pick the deeper seat — upright sitters adapt faster than loungers. Sit in our showrooms for ten minutes, not ten seconds.

Frames outlive covers

A solid beech or oak frame lasts decades; foam lasts years. That is fine, as long as both can be renewed. Every Fernhollow sofa has a frame guaranteed for ten years and covers you can wash, replace or re-order in any of our 28 fabrics.

Workshop tip — Bring your room measurements to any showroom and we will tape the sofa's footprint on the floor with you. It takes five minutes and prevents five years of regret.
