Inside the workshop in Jutland

June 2026 · 6 min · Making

Hand tools on the Fernhollow workshop wall

Eleven makers, one long timber store, and a kettle that has survived three managers. A walk through the room where every Fernhollow piece starts.

The timber store

European oak arrives rough-sawn and waits — two years of air-drying before it is allowed near a sofa frame. Shortcuts here are how wobbles are born. We do not take them.

One maker, one piece

Each piece is built start to finish by one maker, whose initials are stamped under the seat rail. If it ever comes back for repair, it goes to the same bench.

The travertine saw

Stone cuts slowly or it cracks. Our saw takes most of a morning to cut a single Strata top, and the offcuts become side tables. Nothing leaves in a skip.

Workshop tip — Visit on a Friday and the showroom team will walk you through the workshop too — sawdust, kettle and all. No appointment needed.
