Living with oiled oak

August 2026 · 4 min · Care

Oiled oak furniture in a warm living room

Oiled oak is a living finish: it marks, it mellows, and — unlike lacquer — it forgives. A water ring is not damage. It is a ten-minute job, and here it is.

Water rings

Let the spot dry fully, then rub a drop of maintenance oil along the grain with a soft cloth. Nine rings out of ten vanish. The tenth means the oil layer was thin — see the re-oil below.

Sunlight

Oak darkens in sun, fastest in the first year. Rotate the objects that live on your table twice a year and the colour evens out instead of outlining your fruit bowl forever.

The ten-minute re-oil

Once a year: wipe the surface with a damp cloth, let it dry, apply a thin coat of hardwax oil with the grain, wait twenty minutes, buff off the excess. Done. Your table looks a year old again.

Workshop tip — Never sand a ring before trying oil. Sanding removes finish you will have to rebuild; oil usually just replaces what the water displaced.
