Lighting a living room with three lamps

July 2026 · 5 min · Lighting

Glowing pendant lamp for living room lighting

The ceiling light is the problem. One bright source overhead flattens every face and every fabric. Three small lamps — low, warm, spread around the room — do the opposite.

One: the reading lamp

An adjustable floor lamp beside the chair you actually sit in, shade at shoulder height, warm bulb. This is the lamp that earns its keep every night.

Two: the table lamp

A low lamp on the sideboard or shelf behind the sofa. It bounces off the wall and makes the whole room feel taller. Dimmer essential.

Three: the pendant

One pendant over the coffee table or dining table, hung lower than you think — 70 cm above the surface. It marks the gathering point the way a rug marks the sitting point.

Workshop tip — Put all three on warm 2700K bulbs and, if you can, one dimmer. Rooms feel expensive when the light is low and layered, not when the bulbs are.
